Storytelling
The year is 1525. Klaus Kniphof sets sail from the Netherlands with his two ships, Gallion and Flyvende Geist. His course is set for Lista, where he gathers a crew and loads up with weapons and supplies—fully prepared for a ruthless expedition destined to make its mark on history. At the same time, Captain Klement leads a mutiny aboard the Danish warship Peter van Høll. Gaining control of this vessel, along with the infamous Den Sorte Jakt ("The Black Chase"), he heads for Flekkerøy. This marks the beginning of what can rightly be called Pirates of the North Sea—a bold and merciless assault on the Hanseatic merchant fleet. Together, they establish pirate strongholds along the Agder coast, rallying a band of rogues, deserters, and fortune seekers. Striking from the fjords and skerries of Southern Norway, they capture ships and secretly sell the spoils in Edinburgh. In 1525 alone, as many as 172 ships were reportedly seized—shaking trade routes to their core and causing panic all along the North Sea coast. But for Kniphof, the campaign ends in tragedy. He is captured and executed as a pirate in Hamburg on October 30, 1525. Captain Klement, however, escapes—and continues his life of piracy for another seven years, until 1532. |

Spieghel der Zeevaerdt (Leyden, 1584–1585), compiled by Lucas Jansz Waghenaer, combined nautical charts with detailed sailing directions—including descriptions of the southern coast of Norway. The work is considered the first of its kind in the history of maritime cartography. Spieghel der Zeevaerdt was a groundbreaking publication and an immediate success.
